Bob Turley, Yankees Pen Roughed Up In Loss to Athletics

Athletics 12, Yankees 6  (43-23)

Bob Turley and the bullpen were knocked around as the Yankees failed to sweep the Athletics on the road.  Turley gave up three runs in 3 2/3 innings and it was Art Ditmar who took the loss.  He fell to 2-1 and he gave up two runs in his one inning of relief.

Mickey Mantle belted his fourteenth homerun of the season in the loss.  Moose Skowron went one for three with two walks and two runs.

Whitey Ford Wins 100th Game With Three Hit Shutout

Yankees 8, Athletics 0  (43-22)

White Ford threw a three hit shutout and the Yankees piled on eight runs as the Yankees picked up their fourth straight win.  Ford improved to 9-3 and he gave up just two walks and he struck out eight.  It was Ford’s 100th career win.

Yogi Berra led the way at the plate. He went two for four with a homerun and three RBIs.  Norm Siebern and Andy Carey also left the park in the win.

Yogi Berra Helps Hit Yankees To Blowout Win Over Athletics

Yankees 10, Athletics 3  (42-22)

The Yankees made it three straight wins in a 10-3 blowout in the Yankees opener against the Athletics.  Gil McDougald went two for five with a double, three RBIs and a run.  Yogi Berra went three for four with a triple, a walk, two RBIs and three runs.

Duke Maas didn’t last long in this one and he was shelled for three runs in two innings.  The pen picked him up through and Zach Monroe and Art Ditmar combined to throw seven innings of shutout relief.  Ditmar picked up the win and he improved to 2-0 on the season.

Moose Skowron Drives In A Pair, Yankees Edge White Sox

Yankees 4, White Sox 3  (41-22)

The Yankees won what turned out to be their rubber game with the White Sox in a close contest.  Moose Skowron singled and he drove in two runs in the Yankees three run sixth inning and Norm Siebern went yard with what turned out to be the game winner, a solo homer in the seventh inning.

Johnny Kucks improved to 6-3 with a solid start.  He gave up three runs on seven hits and three walks in 6 1/3 innings.  Art Ditmar didn’t allow a baserunner in 1 2/3 shutout innings and he picked up his first save of the season.

Jerry Lumpe’s Three Run Blast Helps Push Yankees Over White Sox

Yankees 6, White Sox 2  (40-22)

The Yankees evened up their series with the White Sox in a game where five of the six Yankee runs came via the long ball.  Mickey Mantle and Norm Siebern both belted solo homers and Jerry Lumpe belted a big three run blast in the fourth inning.  For Mantle, it was his thirteenth of the season.  For Lumpe, it was his first major league homer of his career.

Bob Turley threw a nice game and he improved to 11-3.  He gave up two runs on seven hits and three walks with four strikeouts in 6 1/3 innings.  Ryne Duren picked up his eleventh save in impressive fashion.  He walked just one batter and struck out six in 2 2/3 innings of no-hit relief.

Yankees Shut Out Again, Held to Three Hits

The Yankees hitters were held in check to the tune of just three hits as the Yankees opened their series with the White Sox in the loss column.  No Yankee reached base more then once and all three hits were for just one base.

A pretty good start by Whitey Ford went to waste and he fell to 8-3 on the season.  He gave up two runs on seven hits and four walks with four strikeouts in the complete game loss.

Yankees Demolish Tigers In Series Finale

Yankees 15, Tigers 0  (39-21)

The Yankees got the Tigers monkey off their backs in grand fashion with a 15-0 pasting in which just about everyone was a hitting star.  Gil McDougald went four for six with two doubles, three runs and three RBIs.  Elston Howard also had a nice game and he went two for five with his seventh homerun, three RBIs and two runs.

Don Larsen was just as good on the mound and he improved to 6-1 with a two hit shutout.  He walked three and struck out three in the win.

Yankees Held to Six Hits In Another Shutout Loss

Tigers 1, Yankees 0  (38-21)

The Yankees outhit the Tigers 6-4 but the Tigers scored the lone run in a solid pitchers duel between Frank Lary and Duke Maas.  Maas gave up just one run on four hits and a walk with three strikeouts in seven innings but one of those hits was a solo homer by Al Kaline that proved to be the difference.

Norm Siebern was the only Yankee with a pair of hits.  All six Yankees hits were singles.

Yankees Held to Five Hits In Loss to Tigers

The Yankees still couldn’t figure out the Tigers regardless of the venue and in this one, the offense was held to just five hits.  Tony Kubek went two for three and Yogi Berra drove in the lone run with a solo homer in the fourth inning.

Bob Turley took the loss and he fell to 10-3.  He gave up three runs on four hits and four walks with two strikeouts in six innings.  Virgil Trucks and Bobby Shantz combined to give up four runs in the seventh inning to complete the blowout.

Andy Carey Homers Twice In Yankees Win

Yankees 9, indians 3  (38-19)

The Yankees finished up a sweep over the Indians in grand fashion.  Four Yankees belted a total of five homeruns and it was Andy Carey who led the way with two blasts.  He drove in three while Enos Slaughter, Elston Howard and Hank Bauer all went yard as well.

Johnny Kucks improved to 5-3 on the season.  HE gave up three runs on eight hits and two walks with four strikeouts in the complete game win.

Hank Bauer and Elston Howard Homer In Yankee Win

Yankees 3, Indians 2  (37-19)

Hank Bauer and Elston Howard homered in the Yankees three run first inning and while that was all the Yankees would get, it was good enough for the win.  Howard finished the game 2-4 and his homerun was a two run shot. 

Art Ditmar won his first decision of the season and he improved to 1-0.  He gave up two unearned runs on three hits and two walks with two strikeouts in 6 2/3 innings.  Ryne Duren didn’t allow a baserunner and he struck out two in 2 1/3 innings of relief.  That was good for his tenth save of the season.

Whitey Ford Throws Three Hitter, Yankees Snap Four Game Skid

The Yankees snapped their four game losing streak behind an exceptional three hit shutout by Whitey Ford.  He gave up just the three hits with two walks and he struck out ten.

Moose Skowron had the big blast with three run homer in the sixth inning.  Hank Bauer went three for four and he scored one of the Yankees runs.

Yankees Held Scoreless In Doubleheader Sweep By Tigers

Tigers 2, Yankees 0  (35-18)

It was the Yankees fourth doubleheader in eight days and it must have been taking it’s toll because the Yankees were completely shut down.  The Yankees managed four hits and all four were singles and they were unable to push a single baserunner across the plate.

A pretty good start by Don Larsen went to waste.  He fell to 5-1 and he gave up two runs on five hits and three walks with three strikeouts in seven innings of work.

It’s bad enough getting swept in a doubleheader but it’s even worse when you can’t manage a single run in either game.  The Yankees dropped their fourth straight to the Tigers and in this finale, they managed just five hits in a shutout loss.  Jerry Lumpe had two of those hits and all five hits were singles.

Bob Turley suffered his second loss of the season and he fell to 10-2.  He gave up three runs on six hits and three walks with nine strikeouts in eight solid frames.

Yankees Blow Comeback In Loss to Tigers

The Yankees came back in the eighth inning to take a one run lead only to have the Tigers scored two in the ninth to steal the win.  Ryne Duren gave up the final run and he took the loss.  He fell to 3-2 while Johnny Kucks decent start went to waste.  He gave up three runs on nine hits and one walk with two strikeouts seven innings of work.

Yogi Berra had the big hit with an eighth inning three run homer.  It was his tenth homer of the season and Norm Siebern went three for four with an RBI.

Mickey Mantle Hits Twelfth Homer In Yankees Loss to Tigers

Bobby Shantz had a mediocre start and he fell to 4-3 as the Yankees dropped their series opener to the Tigers.  Shantz gave up four runs (three earned) on nine hits and a walk with six strikeouts in seven innings of work.

Mickey Mantle belted his twelfth homerun of the season to account for one of the Yankees two runs.  Andy Carey went one for three with a walk and he drove in the other run.

Yankees Split Doubleheader With Athletics

The Yankees offense was held in check as they kicked off their second doubleheader with the Athletics in as many days.  Andy Carey had two of the Yankees eight hits and he accounted for their lone run with a solo homer in the eighth inning.

Tom Sturdivant took the loss and he fell to 1-4.  He gave up three runs on seven hits and two walks with six strikeouts in five innings.  Art Ditmar threw a solid game and he held the Athletics to one unearned run on four hits in three innings of relief.  The win by the Athletics snapped a seventeen game losing streak at Yankee Stadium

Back to back doubleheaders are tough enough but when the final game goes twelve innings, it makes for a long week.  Still, Elston Howard singled home Andy Carey in the bottom of the twelth for the game winner.  Mickey Mantle drew four walks in the game while Moose Skowron went two for six with his sixth homer of the season.

Whitey Ford had an exceptional start but unfortunately, he didn’t get the win.  He gave up two runs on ten hits with seven strikeouts in 10 1/3 innings.  Ryne Duren struck out four of the five batters he faced in 1 2/3 innings of perfect relief and he improved to 3-1 on the season.

Yankees Sweep Doubleheader Over Athletics

Elston Howard and Tony Kubek led the way at the plate for the Yankees in their first game of a doubleheader with the Athletics.  Kubek went three for five with a homerun, three RBIs and two runs while Howard went three for four with a double, a triple, three RBIs and a run.  Yogi Berra pitched in with a solo homer, his ninth long ball of the season.

Don Larsen improved to a perfect 5-0 with a solid start.  He gave up two runs on six hits and seven walks with five strikeouts in 6 2/3 innings.  Ryne Duren held the Athletics to just one hit in the final 2 2/3 innings and he earned save number nine.

The Yankees finished up their sweep over the Athletics behind another great start by Bob Turley.  He improved to 10-1 and he gave up just a single run on six hits and three walks with three strikeouts in the complete game win.

The Yankees managed just five hits to go along with their six walks but it was enough for the win.  Bobby Richardson tripled and drove in a run while Norm Siebern singled, drew two walks and scored a run.

Yankees Lose Two to Indians

Indians 14, Yankees 1  (32-13)

The Yankees suffered their most lopsided loss of the season in the first game of their doubleheader with the Indians.  Johnny Kucks gave up three runs on four hits and he got just one batter out in the first inning before Art Ditmar came into the game.  Ditmar gave up eleven runs in 6 2/3 innings but just five of those were earned because the Yankees made three errors in the contest.

Andy Carey and Bobby Richardson each had three hits in the blowout loss.  Richardson also stole his first base of the season and he scored the lone Yankee run.

Indians 5, Yankees 4  (32-14)

After taking the first two games in their series with the Indians, the Yankees lost two to them in one day as they dropped both games of their doubleheader.  Sal Maglie gave up four runs in three innings in his start but the Yankees came back to tie it up in the fifth.  Unfortunately Johnny Kucks gave up a six inning run that turned out to be the difference in the game.

Enos Slaughter went two for three with a walk, a homerun and two runs.  Mickey Mantle hit a solo shot in the fourth inning, his eleventh homer of the season.

Yogi Berra Drives In Four In Yankees Second Straight Win

The Yankees made it two straight over the Indians behind a nice game by Yogi Berra.  The backstop belted a three run homer, his eighth long ball of the season, and he finished with four RBIs.  Mickey Mantle singled, walked and scored twice.

Whitey Ford improved to 7-2 with a nice start.  He gave up three runs on ten hits and one walk with five strikeouts in the complete game win.

Mickey Mantle Homers Twice In Win Over Indians

Mickey Mantle had a huge day at the plate as the Yankees held off the Indians to pick up the win in their series opener.  Mantle was three for three with a walk, two homers and four RBIs.  Andy Carey and Tony Kubek both had three hits and two runs in the win.  For Mantle, the two homers brought his season total up to ten.

Bob Turley improved to 9-1 with a rocky but effective outing.  He gave up five runs on seven hits and four walks with nine strikeouts in another complete game.

Yankees Split Doubleheader With White Sox

Yankees 12, White Sox 5  (30-11)

The Yankees won their 30th game of the season in the first game of a doubleheader with the White Sox.  Mickey Mantle hit a solo homer for his eighth of the season and he finished with three runs while Enos Slaughter was a perfect three for three with a walk, two runs and two RBIs.

Don Larsen improved to perfect 4-0 even though he didn’t have his best stuff.  He gave up five runs on seven hits and two walks with three strikeouts in 6 1/3 innings.  Ryne Duren threw 2 2/3 shutout innings to close out the game and he picked up save number eight.

White Sox 3, Yankees 2  (30-12)

The Yankees had to settle for a split in their doubleheader and series with the White Sox after a 3-2 loss in the second game of the twinbilling.  Sal Maglie gave up an RBI single in the top of the ninth and that proved to be the deciding run but because the Yankees didn’t score either of their two runs until the bottom of the ninth, it was Bobby Shantz who took the loss despite a solid start.  He fell to 4-2 and he gave up two runs on ten hits and three walks with four strikeouts in eight innings of work.

Andy Carey had a pair of singles and he scored a run.  Mickey Mantle was 0 for 3, but he drew a walk and scored a run.

Tom Sturdivant Is Hit Hard In Yankees Loss

White Sox 7, Yankees 2  (29-11)

The Yankees four game winning streak came to an end behind a rough outing by Tom Sturdivant.  He fell to 1-3 and he gave up five runs on six hits and three walks with a strikeout in six innings.  Bob Grim was also tagged for a pair of runs in his two innings of work.

Yogi Berra and Mickey Mantle both hit their seventh homers of the season.  Berra went yard in the second inning while Mantle’s came in the sixth.  Mantles homer was measured at 478 feet and it landed between the 19th and 20th row of the auxiliary scoreboard.

Johnny Kucks Throws Two Hit Shutout

For the second straight game, a Yankee starter hurled a shutout and this time it was Johnny Kucks who got it done with a two hitter.  He walked three and struck out two and the win pushed his record to 4-1.

Mickey Mantle, Bill Skowron and Yogi Berra all went yard in this one.  Tony Kubek, Mantle and Gil McDougald all drove in three runs in the blowout while Hank Bauer and Mantle scored three runs each.

Hank Bauer Homers Twice In Win Over White Sox

The Yankees kicked off their homestand with a win behind a solid seven hit shutout by Whitey Ford.  He walked four and struck out ten and the win pushed his record to 6-2 on the season.

Hank Bauer belted a pair of solo homers and that brought his season total up to five on the season.  Mickey Mantle hit a solo homer of his own and like Bauer, it was his fifth of the season.  Bauer’s second homer was a huge shot that hit off of the facing of the upper deck.

Andy Carey Homers Twice In Yankees Win

Yankees 10, Red Sox 4  (27-10)

Andy Carey had a career day at the Yankees trounced the Red Sox to wrap up a two game sweep.  Carey was a perfect five for five with two homers, a double, four RBIs and three runs.  Elston Howard also had a nice day at the plate and he went three for five with a double, two runs and two RBIs.  Moose Skowron had just one single, but he drove in three runs.

Bob Turley bounced back from his first loss of the season and he improved to 8-1.  He gave up four runs on five hits and four walks with ten strikeouts in the complete game win.

Yankees Snap Skid, Top Red Sox In Ten

Yankees 5, Red Sox 4  (26-10)

It took ten ininngs but the Yankees snapped their four game skid and finished the month of May on a winning note.  Yogi Berra capped off a three run ninth with a two run double that sent the game into extra frames and then Enos Slaughter belted a two run homer in the top of the tenth to give the Yanks the runs they’d need to win it.

Don Larsen threw seven solid innings in a no decision.  He gave up three runs on eight hits and four walks with two strikeouts in seven innings of work.  Ryne Duren pitched the final two frames and while he gave up a run, he improved to 2-1.

Yankees Losing Streak Extended to Four Games After Doubleheader Sweep By Senators

For the first time all season, the Yankees had a three game losing streak and this time it was the pitching and defense that got them into trouble.  Whitey Ford last just three innings but four of the six runs he gave up were unearned.  Bob Grim also had a tough time and he gave up five runs on four hits and a walk with three strikeouts in 2 2/3 innings.  He fell to 0-1 on the season.

Harry Simpson had a team high four hits and he drove in three runs.  Gil McDougald singled twice, drew a walk, drove in a run and scored.

Senators 7, Yankees 2  (25-10)

The Senators handed the Yankees their fourth straight loss as the doubleheader between the two teams resulted in a sweep.  Bobby Shantz had a tough start and he fell to 4-1.  He gave up five runs on six hits with six strikeouts in seven innings and three of the six hits he gave up went over the fence.

Gil McDougald singled, drew a walk and drove in both Yankees runs.  Tony Kubek had a team high two hits and he scored a run.

Yankees Blow Three Run Lead In Second Straight Loss to A’s

The Yankees blew a three run lead and for just the second time this season, they lost back to back games.  Tom Sturdivant had a 3-0 lead but he gave up four runs between the fifth and sixth inning and he fell to 1-2.  A field error by Marv Throneberry resulted in two unearned runs in the sixth inning.

Hank Bauer was the hitting star in the loss.  He went two for four with his third homer and two runs.  Yogi Berra drew a pair of walks and he scored the other Yankees run.

Bob Turley Loses First Game

Athletics 7, Yankees 3  (25-7)

In just their third loss in the month of May, Bob Turley suffered his first loss of the season with a rough outing.  He yielded six runs on eight hits and two walks with three strikeouts and he lasted just six innings. 

Elston Howard belted his fourth homer of the season and he finished with two RBIs.  Jerry Lumpe tripled, drove in a run and scored.

Yankees Sweep Doubleheader Over Indians

Yankees 6, Indians 1  (24-6)

The Yankees got right back to winning as they took the first game of their Sunday doubleheader with the Indians.  Whitey Ford improved to 5-2 and he gave up just a single on six hits and three walks with five strikeouts.

Yogi Berra provided the bulk of the offense with a three run homer.  It was one of just three hits and it was his fifth long ball of the season.  Harry Simpson finished the game with a single, a double and two RBIs.

Yankees 6, Indians 3  (25-6)

The Yankees made it a sweep of their doubleheader over the Indians and it was their twelth win in thirteen games.  Enos Slaughter and Elston Howard both went yard for the Yankees and both were big three run shots.  Mickey Mantle and Jerry Lumpe both finished the game with a pair of hits.

Johnny Kucks improved to 3-1 with a solid start.  He gave up three runs on seven hits and two walks with a strikeout in 6 2/3 innings.  Ryne Duren allowed just one hit with four strikeouts in 4 1/3 innings and he picked up his seventh save of the season.
