Cliff Johnson, Mickey Rivers Each Drive In Three Runs In Yankees Fourth Straight Win

Yankees 9, Athletics 2  (58-45)

The Yankees blew out the Athletics for their fourth straight win and it was Cliff Johnson and Mickey Rivers who came up with the big hits.  Johnson belted a three run homer and he scored twice while Rivers singled and drove in three runs.  Graig Nettles pitched in with a single, a walk and three runs.

Ed Figueroa picked up the win and he improved to 10-7.  He gave up two runs on seven hits and two walk with three strikeouts in eight innings of work.

Don Gullett Wins Tenth Game, Yankees Win Third Straight

Yankees 9, Athletics 3  (57-45)

Don Gullett improved to 10-3 on the season with a nice start in the Yankees third straight win.  He gave up just two runs on six hits and two walks with four strikeouts in six innings.  Dick Tidrow gave up one run in the final three frames and he picked up his fifth save of the season.

Roy White had a huge day at the plate. He went four for five with a homerun, four RBIs and two runs.  Reggie Jackson homered and drove in two runs and that was his 18th homer of the season.

Ron Guidry Pitches Yankees to Win Over Athletics

Yankees 4, Athletics 0  (56-45)

Ron Guidry fell one out short of throwing a five hit shutout but his pitching performance was impressive none the less.  Guidry gave up just five hits and five walks with seven strikeouts and the win pushed his record to 8-5 on the season.  Guidry did load the bases up in the ninth but Sparky Lyle came in to put out the first and he got the final out of the game to pick up his sixteenth save of the season.

Willie Randolph went three for five with a double, a triple and two runs.  Cliff Johnson and Graig Nettles both belted solo homeruns to help out the cause.

Yankees Shell Orioles 14-2

Yankees 14, Orioles 2  (55-45)

The Yankees poured on the offense in a game where three different Yankees drove in three runs a piece.  Chris Chambliss went three for three with two walks, three RBIs and two runs.  Thurman Munson, Graig Nettles and Roy White all went yard in the win.

Mike Torrez picked up the win and he improved to 9-10 on the season.  He gave up two runs on four hits and four walks with six strikeouts in the complete game.

Catfish Hunter, Dick Tidrow Hit Hard In Eighth Inning

Orioles 6, Yankees 4  (54-45)

The Yankees were cruising along in this one and they took a 2-1 lead into the eighth when the wheels fell off the wagon.  Catfish Hunter gave up two runs and then Dick Tidrow was shelled for three runs all in the eighth inning.  The Yankees scored single runs in the eighth and ninth but it wasn’t enough to complete the come back.

Mickey Rivers went two for five with a run and an RBI.  Roy White drew four walks and scored a run in the loss.

Yankees Top Orioles In Ten Innings

Yankees 5, Orioles 4  (54-44)

Reggie Jackson hit a tenth inning walk off solo homer to win it in dramatic fashion for the Yankees in their extra inning win over the Orioles.  They needed a two run pinch hit homer in the bottom of the ninth to win it as well and even more impressive was the fact that the Orioles took a 4-0 lead.

Ed Figueroa gave up four runs in 8 2/3 innings and he didn’t get a decision.  Sparky Lyle threw 1 1/3 shutout innings and he improved to 8-3 on the season with the win.

Don Gullett Holds Royals to a Single Run

Yesterday, it was Ron Guidry.  Today is Don Gullett who pitched the Yankees to a win.  Like Guidry, he gave up just one run.  He gave up eight hits and five walks with five strikeouts in 8 2/3 innings.  Dick Tidrow got the final out of the game and he picked up his fourth save of the season.

Chris Chambliss went three for four with two doubles and a run.  Lou Piniella singled and drove in two runs.

Ron Guidry Pitches Yankees to Win Over Brewers

Ron Guidry improved to 7-5 on the season with a great start in the Yankees win over the Brewers.  He gave up just one run on six hits and two walks with nine strikeouts in the complete game win.

Paul Blair doubled, homered, drove in two and scored a run.  Lou Piniella went three for three with an RBI.

Mike Torrez Is Hit Hard In Loss to Brewers

Brewers 6, Yankees 3  (51-44)

Mike Torrez fell to 8-10 on the season with a tough start in the Yankees second straight loss to the Brewers.  He gave up five runs on eight hits and three walks with three strikeouts in 6 2/3 innings.  Sparky Lyle was also tagged for a run in the seventh inning and he got just one batter out.

Graig Nettles hit homerun number 22.  He went two for four and he drove in two runs.  Reggie Jackson had a nice game as well and he went three for four with two doubles, a run and an RBI.

Yankees Split Doubleheader With Brewers to Kick Off Second Half

Catfish Hunter got the Yankees off to a nice start at they opened up the second half with a shutout win over the Brewers in the first game of a doubleheader.  Hunter gave up just five hits and two walks with three strikeouts and the complete game shutout pushed his record to 6-4 on the season.

Graig Nettles provided a lot of the offense with a big three run homer.  It was his 21st homerun of the season.  Roy White went three for five with an RBI.  Chris Chambliss went two for four with a triple, an RBI and two runs.

Brewers 5, Yankees 4  (51-43)

The Yankees blew a big lead and in the process, failed to sweep a doubleheader over the Brewers.  Up 4-0 for pretty much the entire game, the Brewers tagged Ed Figueroa and Sparky Lyle in the ninth for four runs to send the game into extra frames and then Dick Tidrow gave up a run in the tenth as the Brewers completed the comeback.  Tidrow took the loss and he fell to 6-4 on the season.

Thurman Munson went three for five with a run.  Paul Blair singled and he drove in two runs in the loss.

Yankees Lose Third Straight Game As Season’s Second Half Ends

Royals 8, Yankees 4 (50-42)

The Royals did a number on the the Yankees as they finished a three game sweep. Ken Clay was roughed up and he dropped to 0-3 on the season. He gave up four runs on three hits and one walk in just three innings of work.

Willie Randolph went two for five with a double and two RBIs. Reggie Jackson added a run with a solo homerun, his sixteenth long ball of the season.

Yankees Held to Single Run In Second Straight Loss

Royals 5, Yankees 1  (50-41)

Mike Torrez had a tough time and the Royals tagged him for single runs in the first four frames as the Yankees lost their second straight game.  Torrez gave up four runs on ten hits and two walks in 5 1/3 innings and the loss dropped him to 8-9 on the season.

Offense was the big problem and the Yankees didn’t get much of it.  Chris Chambliss went three for four and Bucky Dent singled and he scored the only run.

Royals Rough Up Ron Guidry In Yankees Loss

Ron Guidry had a tough time against the Royals and he fell to 6-5 with the loss.  He gave up six runs on eight hits and one walk with four strikeouts in 4 1/3 innings.

Thurman Munson was the hitting star in the loss.  He went three for four wih two RBIs.  Mickey Rivers also had a nice game and he went three for five with a run and an RBI.

Reggie Jackson Homers Twice In Yankees’ 50th Win

Reggie Jackson had a big day at the plate as he led the Yankees in their win over the Brewers.  He went two for four with two homers and three RBIs and the two longballs bring his season total to fifteen.  Rookie George Zeber also made a contribution with a two run homer in the seventh inning.

Ed Figueroa picked up the win and he improved to 9-7 on the season.  He gave up three runs on seven hits and two walks with three strikeouts in 6 2/3 innings.  Sparky Lyle didn’t give up a run in the 2 1/3 innings and he picked up his fifteenth save of the season.

Yankees Comeback Falls Short In Loss to Brewers

The Yankees scored five runs in the eighth inning to make a 9-3 deficit into a one run game but they fell just short of sending the game into extra frames.  Mickey Rivers was the big run producer of the game. He belted two homers and he drove in four runs.  Chris Chambliss went three for five with a run.

Catfish Hunter took the loss and he fell to 5-4 on the season.  He gave up six runs on eight hits and two walks with four strikeouts in five innings of work.

Don Gullett, Dick Tidrow Both Shutdown Brewers In Yankees Win

Don Gullett and Dick Tidrow combined to hold the Brewers to just four hits in a win in their series opener.  Gullett picked up the win and he held the Brewers to two runs on four hits and six walks with six strikeouts in 6 2/3 innings.  Tidrow threw 2 1/3 innings of shutout relief to pick up his third save of the season.

Willie Randolph had a huge day at the plate in the win.  He went three for five with a homerun, two RBIs and two runs.  The long ball was his fourth of the season.

Mike Torrez Falls Apart In Late Innings In Loss to Orioles

Yankees 4, Orioles 3  (48-38)

Mike Torrez was crusing along in this one and he had a 3-1 lead going into the seventh inning.  He then gave up two runs in the seventh and he allowed the winning run to reach base in the ninth as the Orioles came from behind to beat the Yankees.  Torrez took the loss and he fell to 8-8 on the season.  There was a scary moment in the ninth when Sparky Lyle was hit by a comebacker (the ball was actually caught by Willie Randolph on the fly) and had to leave the game.

Graig Nettles provided most of the offense with a pair of solo homers.  The two longballs put his season total at 20 for the season.

Yankees Held to Five Hits In Shutout Loss to Orioles

The Yankees didn’t get much done at the plate in their 6-0 loss to the Orioles.  Lou Piniella was the only hitter who really put together a nice game and he had three of the five singles that the Yankees had in the game.

Ed Figueroa dropped to 8-7 on the season with the loss.  He gave up five runs on six hits and two walks with six strikeouts in six innings.

Two Errors Cost Yankees In Loss to Orioles

Orioles 6, Yankees 5  (48-36)

The Yankees made two key errors in the eighth inning that helped lead to three unearned runs as the Yankees blew a two run lead in a loss to the Orioles.  Sparky Lyle too the loss and he gave up those three unearned runs and Ron Guidry gave up three runs in six innings in his start.

Graig Nettles and Thurman Munson both hit homers in the loss.  Nettles finished with two runs and two RBIs.

Thurman Munson Drives In Four In Yankees Fourth Straight Win

The Yankees won their fourth straight and they did it on the back of their catcher, Thurman Munson.  He went two for four with a homerun and four RBIs.  Graig Nettles was the other hitting star and he went two for four with a homerun and three RBIs.

Don Gullett picked up the win and he improved to 7-3 on the season.  He gave up five runs (four earned) on eight hits and six walks with four strikeouts in 6 2/3 innings.

Catfish Hunter Pitches Yankees to Third Straight Win

The Yankees got plenty of offense in this one, but it was Catfish Hunter who led the way for the Yankees as they finished up a three game sweep over the Indians.  Hunter gave up two runs on just four hits and two walks with three strikeouts in the complete game.

Lou Piniella homered, drove in two and scored two runs.  Graig Nettles singled twice and he drove in two runs.

Sparky Lyle Shuts Down Indians For Second Straight Win

The Yankees played a back and forth game against the Indians, but once Sparky Lyle came into the pitch, the Indians were pretty much completely shut down.  He held the Indians to just a single hit in 4 1/3 shutout innings to close out the game and he improved to 7-2 on the season.

Reggie Jackson went three for four with two doubles, a run and an RBI.  Chris Chambliss went two for four with a double and two runs.

Yankees Belt Four Homers In Series Opener Against Indians

The Yankees took care of the Indians on Independence Day and they did it with the long ball.  Graig Nettles, Roy White, Chris Chambliss and Lou Piniella all hit solo homeruns in the win while Thurman Munson doubled, singled and drove in two runs.

Ed Figueroa picked up the win and he improved to 8-6 on the season.  He gave up three runs on six hits and five walks with three strikeouts in 7 1/3 innings.

Yankees Split Doubleheader With Tigers

Ron Guidry threw his second shutout of the season as he held the Tigers to six hits.  He gave up just two walks and he struck out nine and the win pushed his record to 6-4 on the season.

Reggie Jackson went three for four with a double and a run.  Bucky Dent singled twice and Roy White doubled and drove in a run.

Tigers 10, Yankees 6  (44-35)

Dick Tidrow gave up five runs in the final two frames as the Yankees lost their chance at a doubleheader sweep.  The loss dropped Tidrow’s record to 6-3 on the season and he finished the game with three homeruns given up in his four innings of work.

Lou Piniella went three for five with two RBIs and a run.  Fran Healy went three for three with two doubles, a run and an RBI.

Yankees Come From Behind to Beat Tigers

Yankees 6, Tigers 4  (43-34)

The Yankees came back from a 4-1 deficit to beat the Tigers in a hard fought win.  Roy White doubled home two runs in the bottom of the seventh to tie the game up and then Fred Stanley belted a two run homer in the bottom of the eighth to give the Yankees their game winning runs.

Don Gullett was hit hard and he was pulled in the fifth after he gave up four runs.  Sparky Lyle picked him up though and he gave up just three hits in 4 1/3 shutout innings.  The win pushed his record to 6-2 on the season.

Yankees Shut Down By Tigers’ Rookie Hurler

Tigers 5, Yankees 1  (42-34)

The Yankees couldn’t do much against Tigers’ rookie starter Dave Rozema as he held the home team to just a single run on six hits.  Willie Randolph singled home the only run for the Yankees in the sixth inning while Bucky Dent was the lone Yankee with two hits.

Mike Torrez took the loss and he fell to 8-7 on the season.  He gave up five runs on eight hits and two walks with four walks in 4 2/3 innings.
