Yankees Sweep Doubleheader Over Tigers, Ron Guidry Improves to 13-0 In Opener

Yankees 3, Tigers 2  (44-33)

The Yankees edged the Tigers in the first game of their Sunday doubleheader in a game that saw Ron Guidry improve to a perfect 13-0  He gave up two runs on six hits and two walks with six strikeouts in eight innings.  Goose Gossage threw a perfect ninth and he picked up his twelth save of the season.

Thurman Munson was three for four with a double.  Thomasson continued his impressive hitting and he went two for three with a double and a run.

Yankees 5, Tigers 3  (45-33)

It was a perfect Sunday as the Yankees finished their doubleheader sweep over the Tigers behind a pair of homeruns.  Graig Nettles went yard with a three run blast in the third inning and then Gary Thomasson hit the game winner with a two run walk off homer in the ninth.  Reggie Jackson also had a solid game with a single, a walk and a run.

Dave Rajsich got the start and he gave up two runs on seven hits and three walks with four strikeouts in 4 2/3 innings.  Sparky Lyle cruised through most of his 3 1/3 innings of relief before he gave up a run in the ninth with some help from Goose Gossage.  Speaking of Gossage, he let the inherited runner tie the game but he did pick up the win to improve to 4-7 because he didn’t allow either of his two baserunners to score.

Graig Nettles Homers Yankees to Win Over Sox

Yankees 6, Red Sox 4  (42-30)

It took fourteen innings but the Yankees evened up their series with the first place Red Sox.  Graig Nettles blasted a huge walk off homer to win and Thurman Munson was three for six with a double, two runs and an RBI.

Ron Guidry looked mortal but he stayed undefeated because of some help from the offense.  He gave up four runs on eight hits and three walks with six strikeouts in six innings.  Goose Gossage threw five shutout innings and Sparky Lyle threw three shutout frames and he improved to 6-1.

Thurman Munson Helps Hit Yankees to Win Over Tigers

Yankees 4, Tigers 2  (41-29)

The Yankees pulled off a win in their series finale with the Tigers and it was behind some exceptional hitting by Thurman Munson.  He went three for four with two RBIs while Damasco Garcia went two for four with three runs.

Don Gullett improved to a perfect 3-0.  He gave up two runs on eight hits and two walks with five strikeouts in 7 2/3 innings.  Goose Gossage pitched 1 1/3 shutout innings and he picked up his eleventh save of the season.

Ron Guidry Strikeouts Out, Improves to 12-0

Yankees 4, Tigers 2  (39-28)

Ron Guidry did it again and he improved to a perfect 12-0 as the Yankees took their series opener over the Tigers.  Guidry gave up two runs on six hits and two walks with eight strikeouts in eight innings.  Goose Gossage pitched a hitless ninth inning and he picked up his tenth save of the season.

Reggie Jackson hit his twelth homer of the season, a solo shot in the ninth inning.  Graig Nettles went two for four with a run.  The Yankees had all four of their runs and five of their nine hits in the ninth inning.

Yankees Blown Out By Division Leading Red Sox

Red Sox 10, Yankees 4  (37-27)

The first place Red Sox were too much to handle as Ken Clay and Goose Gossage were roughed up.  Clay gave up four runs in three innings while Gossage fell to 3-7 and he gave up five runs on six hits and three walks with five strikeouts in 4 1/3 innings.

Roy White was the hitting star in the loss.  He went two for five with a solo homer.  Thurman Munson also went yard with a two run shot.

Graig Nettles’ Three Run Blast Helps Yankees Win Fourth Straight

Yankees 5, Mariners 2  (36-24)

Don Gullett won his first decision of the season, and while he got some help, he was a pivotal part of the Yankees fourth straight win.  He gave up just one run on six hits and a walk with five strikeouts in six innings.  Goose Gossage had a tough time finding the plate and he walked four and gave up a run in two innings while Sparky Lyle threw a perfect ninth to earn his seventh save of the season.

Graig Nettles had the big hit of the game with a three run blast.  It was his twelfth of the season.  Mickey Rivers also went yard and Reggie Jackson reached base three times with a single and two walks.

Roy White Belts Two Homers In Yankees Win Over Athletics

Yankees 5, Athletics 3  (34-24)

Roy White homered twice to help push the Yankees to their second straight win over the Athletics.  He finished with three RBIs while Willie Randolph was a perfect three for three with a walk and two runs.

Ed Figueroa picked up the win and he improved to 7-4.  He gave up three runs on eight hits and two walks with five strikeouts in 6 2/3 innings.  Goose Gossage didn’t allow a hit in 2 1/3 innings and he picked up save number nine.

Yankees Lose to Angels In Twelve Innings

Angels 4, Yankees 3  (32-23)

Goose Gossage gave up a run in the bottom of the twelth inning as the Yankees lost to the Angels by just a single run.  It was Gossage’s fourth inning of work and it followed three pitchers who all gave up one run a piece.

Chris Chambliss went two for four with two runs and two walks.  Mickey Rivers singled twice, stole two bases and drove in one.

Ed Figueroa Pitches Yankees to Win Over Angels

Yankees 3, Angels 1  (32-22)

The Yankees continued their west coast swing and they picked up their second win in a row as they opened up a series with the Angels.  Ed Figueroa threw a solid game and he improved to 6-4.  He gave up one run on seven hits and one walk with three strikeouts in eight innings.  Goose Gossage threw a perfect ninth inning and he picked up his eighth save of the season.

Bucky Dent singled and drove in a pair.  Thurman Munson hit a solo homer in the fourth inning, his third of the season.

Goose Gossage Gives Up Game Winner in Yankees Fourth Straight Loss

Mariners 4, Yankees 3  (30-22)

Goose Gossage lost his fifth game of the season and the Yankees lost their fourth straight when he gave up a run in the bottom of the ninth against the Mariners.  It was Gossage’s third inning of work and up until then he had been fantastic.  Even worse, the run was unearned when Willie Randolph threw a bunt attempt away.

Jim Spencer hit a solo shot, his sixth of the season.  Willie Randolph doubled, scored a run and drove in one.

Ron Guidry Stays Perfect, Strikes Out Eleven in Win Over Athletics

Yankees 3, Athletics 1  (30-18)

Ron Guidry improved to a perfect 8-0 in a game in which he struck out eleven batters.  He gave up just one run on six hits and two walks in 8 1/3 innings.  Goose Gossage got the final two batters out and he picked up his seventh save of the season.

Cliff Johnson singled and drove in a pair of runs in the win.  Lou Piniella was the only Yankees with two hits while Graig Nettles reached base twice with a single and two walks.

Yankees Held to Two Hits In Loss to Orioles

Orioles 1, Yankees 0 (29-18)

The Yankees managed just two hits in a loss that saw a solid outing by Jim Beattie go to waste.  He gave up one unearned run on four hits and six walks with four strikeouts in seven innings.  Goose Gossage kept up the great pitching with two perfect innings to close out the game.

Chris Chambliss and Lou Piniella both singled and that was the extent of the offense.  Jim Spencer reached base twice with a pair of walks.

Yankees Sweep Doubleheader Over Jays

Yankees 5, Blue Jays 3  (27-15)

The Yankees got right back on track with a nice win the first game of their doubleheader with the Blue Jays.  They scored three late runs to come back from a 3-2 deficit and it was Mickey Rivers two run homer in the seventh inning that proved to be the game winner.  Willie Randolph went two for three with two walks, a double and two runs while Lou Piniella was two for two with a walk, a run and an RBI.

Ron Guidry continued his winning streak and he improved to 7-0 to start the season.  He gave up three runs on six hits with six strikeouts in the complete game win.

Yankees 6, Blue Jays 5  (28-15)

The Yankees needed thirteen innings but they finished up their doubleheader sweep over the Blue Jays and took the series three games to one.  Willie Randolph singled home the game winning run in the bottom of the thirteenth to win it and Mickey Rivers pitched in with a two run homer in the third inning.

Goose Gossage was called on to pitch seven innings of relief in this one.  He gave up two runs (one earned) on four hits and two walks with three strikeouts and the win pushed his record to 3-4 on the season.

Yankees Sweep Doubleheader Over Jays

Yankees 2, Blue Jays 1  (22-14)

The Yankees ensured at least a split of their four game series with the Jays as they took the first game of their sunday doubleheader behind a nice outing by Ed Figueroa.  He gave up just one run on eight hits with a walk and a strikeout in eight frames.  The win improved his record to 5-1.  Goose Gossage got the final two batters out and he earned his sixth save of the season.

Cliff Johnson had the big hit of the game.  His two run blast in the second inning gave the Yankees all the runs they’d need to win this one.

Yankees 9, Blue Jays 1  (23-14)

The Yankees finished up their doubleheader sweep over the Blue Jays behind a monster game by Thurman Munson.  The catcher went three for five with a double, his first homer of the season and four RBIs.  Chris Chambliss went three for five with a double and a run.

Ken Clay threw a nice game and he picked up his first win of the season.  He gave up just one unearned run on eight hits with three strikeouts in seven innings.

Ron Guidry Improves to 5-0 In Yankees Win Over Indians

The Yankees salvaged a split in their two game series with the Yankees despite an early three run deficit.  Lou Piniella had the big hit with a two run triple that he later scored on while Thurman Munson was three for five with a run and an RBI.

Ron Guidry improved to 5-0 despite the three early runs.  He gave them up on six hits and three walks with five strikeouts.  Goose Gossage got the final two batters out and he picked up his fifth save of the season.

Yankees Rack Up Hits In Win Over White Sox

Yankees 8, White Sox 3  (19-12)

The Yankees finished up a two game sweep over the White Sox in a game that saw five Yankees have multihit games.  Lou Piniella reached base all five times with two hits and three walks while Thurman Munson went two for four with a walk, two RBIs and three runs.  Chris Chambliss singled twice and he had a team high three RBIs.

Ken Holtzman won his first decision of the season in a mediocre start.  He gave up three runs on eight hits and three walks with a strikeout in 5 1/3 innings.  Goose Gossage was exceptional in relief.  He picked up his fourth save and he got out all eleven batters that he faced.

Reggie Jackson Powers Yankees to Win Over Royals

Yankees 5, Royals 2  (17-11)

Reggie Jackson put the Yankees on his back and he played a role in four of the Yankees five runs.  He went two for three with his seventh homer, three RBIs and two runs.  Willie Randolph had just one hit, but it was double in which he drove in a run and later scored on.

Ron Guidry improved to 4-0 on the season with eight shutout solid innings.  He gave up two runs on eight hits and two walks with six strikeouts.  Goose Gossage threw a shutout ninth and he picked up his third save of the season.

Graig Nettles Homers In Third Straight Game, Yankees Still Lose

Royals 4, Yankees 3  (16-11)

Graig Nettles homered in his third straight game but it was enough as the Yankees lost to the Royals.  Chris Chambliss finished two for four and he scored a run.

Ed Figueroa threw a solid game but it wasn’t enough as he came within one out of going the distance.  He gave up three runs on six hits and two walks with three strikeouts in 8 2/3 innings.  Goose Gossage took the loss when he gave up a solo homer to Amos Otis, the only batter he faced in the game.  The loss dropped his record to 2-4 on the season.

Ron Guidry, Goose Gossage Pitch Yankees to Fifth Straight Win

Yankees 5, Rangers 2  (14-9)

The Yankees won their fifth straight game as Ron Guidry and Goose Gossage combined to shut down the Rangers.  Guidry improved to 3-0 and he gave up just one run on six hits and five walks with seven strikeouts in 6 1/3 innings.  Gossage gave up one run on three hits with two strikeouts in 2 2/3 innings and he picked up his second save in as many games.

Thurman Munson had a big day at the plate.  He went three for four with a double, two RBIs and a run.  Willie Randolph singled, drew a walk and scored twice in the win.

Three Yankees Homer In Fourth Straight Win

Yankees 6, Royals 5  (13-9)

The Yankees homered their way to a sweep over the Royals in what was their fourth straight win.  Jim Spencer, Reggie Jackson and Graig Nettles all went yard for the Yanks.  Spencer’s homer was a two run shot and Graig Nettles solo shot in the eighth broke a 5-5 tie to win it for the Yankees.

Ed Figueroa had a tough start but it was still good enough for the win.  He gave up five runs on ten hits and a walk with three strikeouts in eight innings.  Goose Gossage struck out two in a perfect ninth and he picked up his first save since joining the Yankees.
