Ed Figueroa Is Pummelled In Third Straight Loss

Mariners 7, Yankees 3  (30-21)

The Yankees dropped their third straight as the Mariners racked up seventeen hits.  Ed Figueroa took the brunt of the Mariners offensive attack and he fell to 5-4.  He gave up six runs on nine hits and three walks with one strikeout in four innings.

Thurman Munson was the hitting star in the loss.  He went two for four with a homerun and four RBIs.  Paul Blair also went yard with a solo shot in the seventh inning.

Yankees Bats Held In Check Again

Orioles 3, Yankees 2  (29-17)

For the second straight game, the Yankees’ hitters we held in check to the tune of just two runs on three hits.  The Yankees big inning came in the second when Paul Blair doubled home a pair of runs but it went downhill from there as the Yankees were held to just one hit the rest of the way.

Ed Figueroa fell to 5-3 despite a decent start.  He gave up two runs on seven hits and two walks with six strikeouts in eight innings of work.

Yankees Score Four In The Eighth To Edge Tigers

Yankees 5, Tigers 4  (91-55)

The Yankees came up with four big runs in the eighth inning to overcome what was then a two run deficit to beat the Tigers to kick off a road trip.  Paul Blair capped off the inning with a two run shot while Lou Piniella doubled twice, drove in two runs and scored.

Don Gullett went the distance and he improved to 12-4 on the season.  He gave up four runs (three earned) on eight hits and one walk with five strikeouts.

Mike Torrez Pitches Yankees to Win Over Mariners

Yankees 7, Mariners 1  (60-49)

The Yankees ended their three game skid behind a nice outing by Mike Torrez.  He improved to 11-10 and he gave up one run on six hits and one walk with three strikeouts in a complete game win.

Paul Blair homered, drew two walks and he drove in three runs.  Graig Nettles went three for four with a run and an RBI.

Ron Guidry Pitches Yankees to Win Over Brewers

Yankees 3, Brewers 1  (52-44)

Ron Guidry improved to 7-5 on the season with a great start in the Yankees win over the Brewers.  He gave up just one run on six hits and two walks with nine strikeouts in the complete game win.

Paul Blair doubled, homered, drove in two and scored a run.  Lou Piniella went three for three with an RBI.

Yankees Split Doubleheader With Brewers to Kick Off Second Half

Catfish Hunter got the Yankees off to a nice start at they opened up the second half with a shutout win over the Brewers in the first game of a doubleheader.  Hunter gave up just five hits and two walks with three strikeouts and the complete game shutout pushed his record to 6-4 on the season.

Graig Nettles provided a lot of the offense with a big three run homer.  It was his 21st homerun of the season.  Roy White went three for five with an RBI.  Chris Chambliss went two for four with a triple, an RBI and two runs.

Brewers 5, Yankees 4  (51-43)

The Yankees blew a big lead and in the process, failed to sweep a doubleheader over the Brewers.  Up 4-0 for pretty much the entire game, the Brewers tagged Ed Figueroa and Sparky Lyle in the ninth for four runs to send the game into extra frames and then Dick Tidrow gave up a run in the tenth as the Brewers completed the comeback.  Tidrow took the loss and he fell to 6-4 on the season.

Thurman Munson went three for five with a run.  Paul Blair singled and he drove in two runs in the loss.

Yankees Edge Red Sox For Fourth Straight Win

Yankees 5, Red Sox 4  (40-31)

The Yankees won their fourth straigth game despite blowing a three run lead in the ninth.  Don Gullett took a 4-1 lead into the top of the ninth and then he gave up three runs as the Red Sox tied it.  Fortunately, Paul Blair singled home Roy White in the bottom of the ninth to win it.

Sparky Lyle got just one batter out but it was good enough to pick up the win.  Mickey Rivers went three for five with three runs while Thurman Munson had three hits and two RBIs.

Don Gullett Pitches Yankees to Win Over Royals

Don Gullett improved to 6-2 on the season with another nice start in the Yankees win over the Royals.  He gave up just two runs on four hits and a walk with six strikeouts in the complete game.

Paul Blair was one of the hitting stars.  He went three for four with a run.  Lou Piniella went two for three with a run, a walk and an RBI.

Yankees Split Doubleheader With Orioles

Orioles 5, Yankees 1  (20-17)

The Yankees dropped their third straight game in the front end of a doubleheader with the Orioles.  The only run of the game for the Yankees came in the second inning when Graig Nettles doubled home Chris Chambliss.  Nettles was also the only Yankee with two hits in the game.

Catfish Hunter had a tough start and he fell to 1-3 with the loss.  He gave up four runs on five hits and one walks with two strikeouts in 5 1/3 innings.

Yankees 8, Orioles 2  (21-17)

The Yankees ended their three game skid behind a nice outing by Ron Guidry, who improved to 3-0 with the win.  He gave up two runs on four hits and five walks with seven strikeouts in 8 1/3 innings.

Graig Nettles capped off a nice twin bill with another good game at the plate.  He went two for five with a homerun, three RBIs and two runs.  Reggie Jackson went two for two with a run and Paul Blair went one for three with two RBIs and a run.
