Chris Chambliss Powers Yankees In Come From Behind Win Over Royals

by @ 3:30 am. Filed under 1977 Yankees, 1977 Yankees Diary - August

August 29, 1977 at Yankee Stadium
Yankees 5, Royals 3  (78-52)

A one run deficit turned into a two run win in a hurry as Chris Chambliss belted a huge three run, pinch hit homerun in the bottom of the eighth to give the Yankees the win.  Cliff Johnson pitched in with a solo homer in the fifth inning while Thurman Munson singled twice, drew a walk and scored.

Catfish Hunter had a nice start but he didn’t pick up the win because of the late inning heroics.  Hunter gave up three runs on six hits and two walks in seven innings.  Sparky Lyle held the Royals scoreless in the final two frames to pick up his tenth win of the season.
