Rangers 2, Yankees 1 (0-1)
Goose Gossage’s debut in a Yankees’ uniform turned out to be a tough on as he gave up the losing run to the Rangers in the Yankees season opener. He pitched a shutout eighth inning but then he gave up a leadoff homer to Richie Zisk in the bottom of the ninth that broke a 1-1 tie. A very nice start by Ron Guidry went to waste and he gave up one run on six hits and two walks with two strikeouts in seven innings.
It didn’t help that the Yankees pushed just one runner across the plate. In the fifth inning, Lou Piniella led off things with a triple and then he later scored on Chris Chambliss’ single. Chambliss and Bucky Dent were the only Yankees with more then one hit in the game.
