The Yankees evened up their record at eight wins and eight losses behind a solid start in rookie Jim Beattie’s major league debut. He gave up just a single run on five hits and three walks with three strikeouts in 6 1/3 innings. Sparky Lyle was touched up for two runs in the ninth but he held on to pick up his second save of the season.
Jim Spencer had two hits including a solo homer. It was his third homerun of the season. Chris Chambliss singled twice, scored a run, drove in one and stole a base in the win.
