Ron Guidry Pitches Yankees to Sweep Over Tigers

by @ 3:17 am. Filed under 1977 Yankees, 1977 Yankees Diary - September

September 18, 1977 at Tiger Stadium
Yankees 6, Tigers 5  (93-57)

The Yankees held back a late inning surge by the Tigers to squeak out a sweep over the Tigers.  Ron Guidry threw eight shutout innings before he got into trouble in the ninth inning.  It didn’t help that Bucky Dent and Cliff Johnson made back to back errors that ended up turning into four unearned runs.  Guidry held on with some help though and he improved to 15-6.  That help was Sparky Lyle, who got the final batter of the game out and he picked up his 24th save of the season.

Reggie Jackson had the big day at the plate.  He went three for four with his thirtieth homer and three RBIs.  Dave Kingman belted a two run homer to help out the cause.
