Royals 10, Yankees 9 (17-12)
The Yankees lost a shootout as they combined with the Royals to score nineteen runs on twenty six hits. The Yankees were up 6-3 at one point then they were down 9-7 before they tie it in the eighth with two runs. Unfortunately, Ken Clay gave up a run on two doubles in the ninth inning to lose it 10-9. Dick Tidrow gave up five runs in 4 2/3 innings and Sparky Lyle was shelled for four runs in 2 1/3 innings.
The Yankees scored all of those runs without getting a homerun. Still, it was Reggie Jackson who led the way. He went two for four with a walk, an RBI, three runs and two stolen bases. Chris Chambliss singled twice, drew a walk, drove in two and scored twice in the loss.
