Red Sox 3, Yankees 1  (1-1)

Tom Sturdivant was knocked around for three runs in five innings as the Yankees dropped their first game of the season.  Sturdivant gave up the three runs on seven hits and two walks.  Ryne Duren was solid with three shutout innings of relief but the hitters couldn’t get it done at the plate to mount a come back.

Gil McDougald doubled home Hank Bauer in the fifth inning to give the Yankees their only run.  No Yankee reached base more then twice in the contest.
