The Yankees needed extra innings to take care of the Dodgers but it was well worth it in front of a home crowd as took care of business to take a 1-0 lead.  Things got off to a rough start when the Dodgers tagged Don Gullett for two runs in the first inning but the Yankees cut that lead in half in the bottom of the first when Chris Chambliss drove in Thurman Munson with Don Sutton on the mound.  The Yankees tied the game up in the on a solo homer by Willie Randolph and then the Yankees took a 3-2 lead in the eighth on Thurman Munson’s RBI double.

With Gullett still on the mound, the Dodgers put two runners on with one out before Billy Martin went to his pen to bring in Sparky Lyle.  Lyle then gave up a single that tied the game up, but after, he didn’t allow a hit in 3 2/3 innings.

The Yankees finally put the game away in the bottom of the twelth inning.  With Rick Rhoden on the mound for the Dodgers, Willie Randolph led off with a double and then Reggie Jackson was given a free pass before Paul Blair singled home Randolph to win it.
