Yankees 11, Mariners 9 (35-24)
The Yankees needed just about every one of their eleven runs as they edged the Mariners for their third straight win. The game was tied 7-7 after nine and then the Mariners scored two in the top of the tenth only to have the Yankees scored four in the bottom of the tenth to win it. Paul Blair had the game winner with a three run, walk off homer. Ron Guidry was even called on to pinch run and he scored on Blair’s blast.
Graig Nettles and Cliff Johnson also went yard in the contest. Lou Piniella had a team high four hits and he drove in three runs.
Sparky Lyle improved to 4-1 despite giving up the two tenth inning runs. He threw the final five innings and he gave up the two runs on six hits and one walk with two strikeouts.
