Yankees 6, Senators 5 (17-5)
Andy Carey’s eighth inning two run homer looked like padding but it turned out to be the difference in the Yankees fourth straight win. The homer gave the Yankees a 6-2 lead but three Senator runs in the bottom of the eighth turned that homer into a neccesity for the win. Carey finished with three RBIs while Mickey Mantle singled, drew a walk, drove in two and scored a run.
Bobby Shantz improved to 4-0 despite running into trouble in that eighth inning. In all, he gave up five runs on nine hits with three strikeouts in 7 1/3 innings. Ryne Duren struck out four in 1 2/3 innings and he picked up his fifth save of the season.
