Tigers 5, Yankees 2  (99-61)

With just two games left in the season, the Yankees still had not clinched the division outright because the Red Sox won another game to stave off elimination.  In the meantime, the Yankees were shut down by Tigers starter John Hiller and they were held to just a pair of runs on eight hits.  Mickey Rivers went two for five with a run while Graig Nettles went two for five with an RBI.

Ron Guidry fell to 16-7 with the loss.  He gave up five runs on ten hits and one walk with two strikeouts in 6 2/3 innings.
