Athletics 4, Yankees 1  (34-15)

The Yankees offense was held in check as they kicked off their second doubleheader with the Athletics in as many days.  Andy Carey had two of the Yankees eight hits and he accounted for their lone run with a solo homer in the eighth inning.

Tom Sturdivant took the loss and he fell to 1-4.  He gave up three runs on seven hits and two walks with six strikeouts in five innings.  Art Ditmar threw a solid game and he held the Athletics to one unearned run on four hits in three innings of relief.  The win by the Athletics snapped a seventeen game losing streak at Yankee Stadium

Back to back doubleheaders are tough enough but when the final game goes twelve innings, it makes for a long week.  Still, Elston Howard singled home Andy Carey in the bottom of the twelth for the game winner.  Mickey Mantle drew four walks in the game while Moose Skowron went two for six with his sixth homer of the season.

Whitey Ford had an exceptional start but unfortunately, he didn’t get the win.  He gave up two runs on ten hits with seven strikeouts in 10 1/3 innings.  Ryne Duren struck out four of the five batters he faced in 1 2/3 innings of perfect relief and he improved to 3-1 on the season.
