Yankees 4, Senators 3  (13-4)

The Yankees held off a late inning surge by the Senators in this one in order to win their fourth straight game in the first game of a Sunday doubleheader.  Bobby Shantz was cruising along until the seventh inning when he started giving up runs.  Single runs in the seventh, eighth and ninth innings made it a one run game and the Yankees needed Ryne Duren to get the final out of the game (with runners at the corners) to preserve the win.  Shantz improved to 3-0 and he gave up three runson seven hits and two walks with five strikeouts in 8 2/3 innings.  Duren picked up his fourth save when he got the one batter out.

Bill Skowron was the hitting star in the win.  He went two for three with a walk, a run and an RBI.  Hank Bauer went two for four with a triple and he scored one run.

The Yankees four game winning streak came to an abrupt end as the Yankees were shutout on five hits.  It was the first shutout of the season for the Yanks and Mickey Mantle was the only hitter who reached base more then once with a pair of singles.

Johnny Kucks had a rough start and he fell to 1-1 with the loss.  He gave up three runs on three hits and two walks with a strikeout in 3 1/3 innings.  Art Ditmar was solid in relief and he gave up just one run on three hits and a walk with a strikeout in 4 2/3 innings.
