The Yankees won their 30th game of the season in the first game of a doubleheader with the White Sox.  Mickey Mantle hit a solo homer for his eighth of the season and he finished with three runs while Enos Slaughter was a perfect three for three with a walk, two runs and two RBIs.

Don Larsen improved to perfect 4-0 even though he didn’t have his best stuff.  He gave up five runs on seven hits and two walks with three strikeouts in 6 1/3 innings.  Ryne Duren threw 2 2/3 shutout innings to close out the game and he picked up save number eight.

The Yankees had to settle for a split in their doubleheader and series with the White Sox after a 3-2 loss in the second game of the twinbilling.  Sal Maglie gave up an RBI single in the top of the ninth and that proved to be the deciding run but because the Yankees didn’t score either of their two runs until the bottom of the ninth, it was Bobby Shantz who took the loss despite a solid start.  He fell to 4-2 and he gave up two runs on ten hits and three walks with four strikeouts in eight innings of work.

Andy Carey had a pair of singles and he scored a run.  Mickey Mantle was 0 for 3, but he drew a walk and scored a run.
