Yankees Sweep Doubleheader Over Athletics

Yankees 10, Athletics 2  (33-14)

Elston Howard and Tony Kubek led the way at the plate for the Yankees in their first game of a doubleheader with the Athletics.  Kubek went three for five with a homerun, three RBIs and two runs while Howard went three for four with a double, a triple, three RBIs and a run.  Yogi Berra pitched in with a solo homer, his ninth long ball of the season.

Don Larsen improved to a perfect 5-0 with a solid start.  He gave up two runs on six hits and seven walks with five strikeouts in 6 2/3 innings.  Ryne Duren held the Athletics to just one hit in the final 2 2/3 innings and he earned save number nine.

Yankees 2, Athletics 1  (34-14)

The Yankees finished up their sweep over the Athletics behind another great start by Bob Turley.  He improved to 10-1 and he gave up just a single run on six hits and three walks with three strikeouts in the complete game win.

The Yankees managed just five hits to go along with their six walks but it was enough for the win.  Bobby Richardson tripled and drove in a run while Norm Siebern singled, drew two walks and scored a run.
