May 17, 1977 at Oakland Coliseum
Yankees 5, Athletics 2 (19-14)
The Yankees won a tough one as they beat the Athletics in fifteen innings. They took a 2-0 lead into the ninth only to have Ron Guidry finally get tagged for two runs to send the game into extra frames. Then six innings later, the Yankees rallied for three runs to finally pick up the win. Chris Chambliss’ two run single turned out to be the game winner and he finished with three RBIs.
Sparky Lyle was awesome in 6 2/3 innings. He not only pitched the Yankees out of the ninth when he came in with two outs but he threw six innings of shutout relief in extra frames.
